Fire Lt. Bassel Ibrahim said it was teamwork, not heroism, that saved a woman in a crash that occurred about 11:00 p.m. Monday night, May 16, 2022 on Narcoossee Road near Northlake Parkway in Lake Nona.

Lt. Bassel Ibrahim, engineer Scott Hammond, and firefighters Daniel Crawford and Korey Steinert stabilized the an overturned car, and removed the rear window. Lt. Ibrahim crawled inside the burning car to give the woman his breathing air mask and tank (SCBA or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) while she was extricated from the vehicle. He worked temporarily without the air pack as firefighters extinguished the fire and extricated the female passenger. The driver was able to get out of the car without the need for extrication, but the air back gave the woman more time to survive until she was extricated by firefighters.

The Orlando Fire Department confirmed that a woman became trapped inside a burning overturned vehicle. The flames were producing so much heavy smoke that the victim had difficulty breathing. According to Orlando Fire Department, in those quick deciding moments, Lt. Ibrahim removed his mask to provide the patient with air, all while still working to get her free. The entire crew continued to apply water to the fire and use extrication equipment to remove the patient. She had only seconds to live without the air pack transfer. She was air lifted to Orlando Health with injuries, but is expected to survive.

Orlando Fire Department offered a synopsis of the operations at the scene. Tower 15’s crew advised the District 5 Chief that they would be in rapid rescue mode. A Tower 15 firefighter knocked the fire back with the water can while a second firefighter and the engineer stretched a hose line. Lt. Ibrahim performed a quick 360 observation of the scene, took the rear window out and made patient contact. A lot of smoke was pumping out of the vehicle and the patient was unable to breath. Lt. Ibrahim took his SCBA airpack off and placed his mask onto the patient’s face with the bypass partially open to buy time for the extrication.

The fire kept reigniting and the fuel started to light off under the vehicle, according to the Orlando Fire Department report. The engineer cut the unlocked trunk out of the way with the sawzall (reciprocating saw) to give room to remove the victim from the rear window. Lt. Ibrahim pried off the roof with a Halligan tool (a popular firefighter’s tool, like a combination crow bar and pick) to create more space, then both the lieutenant and one of the firefighters were able to pull the victim out through the rear window opening and drag her out of harms way. Patient care was initiated and turned over to Engine 16’s crew.

NOTE: WESH ORLANDO in the video refers to the SCBA device as an oxygen mask and oxygen tank, but oxygen masks and tanks are not used near fires because pure oxygen enhances flammability of other materials that are burning, and can cause an explosive reaction. Firefighters use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that contain breathing air, which contains about 21 percent oxygen, not the 100 percent oxygen that is in oxygen tanks.
