The Mariners announced moments before first pitch that the 21-year-old would not play as Seattle tried for its 15th consecutive victory, which would match the franchise record set in 2001. Seattle did not immediately announce why Rodríguez was scratched. Rodríguez was slated to hit leadoff and play center field in the Mariners’ first game back from the All-Star Break. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is expected to win his fourth and final no-confidence vote in Parliament on Saturday, ahead of a general election next year. The vote comes after four days of debate targeting Prayuth and 10 of his Cabinet members. The opposition has blamed his government’s economic mismanagement for rising public debts and its failure to prevent corruption. Prayuth, a retired general, has survived three censure motions since 2020 and analysts expect him to prevail again as his coalition government has a parliamentary majority. Prayuth came to power during a 2014 coup and was later elected in 2019 general elections.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced steps Friday to speed up the clean-energy transition and fight climate change, including an end to building gas-burning power plants, even as the move away from fossil fuels has threatened his state with blackouts and forced him to reconsider nuclear power.
Justin Upton is a free agent again. The Seattle Mariners optioned Upton to Triple-A Tacoma, and Upton refused the assignment and chose to become a free agent for the second time this season. Seattle made the move to create space on the roster after outfielder Kyle Lewis was activated from the seven-day injured list after recovering from a concussion. Upton, who was released by the Los Angeles Angels after spring training, signed a one-year deal with the Mariners on May 21. He joined the big league squad on June 17 after spending a few weeks in Triple-A and hit .125 with six hits and one homer in 48 at-bats.

Two men convicted of killing a pair of California teenagers who vanished nearly six years ago have been sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Chandale Shannon and Jesus Campos were sentenced Friday in Yolo County by a judge who called the crimes evil. They were among four men who were arrested for the 2017 killings of 16-year-old Enrique Rios and his friend, 17-year-old Elijah Moore. Prosecutors said the killings were sparked by revenge after Moore stole some marijuana from some of the men. The teens were killed in secluded areas near Sacramento. Their bodies were never found.

The U.S. Forest Service says it will take emergency action soon to save giant sequoias by speeding up projects to clear underbrush to protect the world’s largest trees from the increasing threat of wildfires. The action planned for this summer was announced Friday and bypasses some environmental reviews typically needed to cut smaller trees in national forests and use intentionally lit low-intensity fires to reduce dense brush. Raging wildfires have killed up to 20% of all large sequoias over the past two years. The effort is one of several under consideration to save the species native only in California. Some environmentalists criticized the plan.

Former Braves and Cubs outfielder Dwight Smith has died at the age of 58. The Braves announced that Smith died Fridayt on congestive heart and lung failure. Smith was a runner-up for NL rookie of the year with the Cubs and went on to play on Atlanta’s World Series-winning team in 1995. Smith played in the big leagues for eight years, also splitting a season between the California Angels and Baltimore Orioles. His son, Dwight Jr., has also spent time in majors, most recently with Baltimore in 2020.
